Your Operators certification is renewed each year at the same time as your BHPA membership with the Chief Coach signing your renewal, (Always assuming he is entirely satisfied with your safety to operate).

Tow Conversions PDF Print E-mail
NHGPC offers tow conversions to all members who require them.

This is a service offered by existing members to newcomers at no charge. You will of course need to pay for the launches in the usual way. We do however request a donation to the club of £25 (or more) to help cover the cost of training the Senior Tow Coaches etc.

Each would-be Tow Pilot needs to be CP rated with a minimum of ten hours flight time.

You will then be coached by a Senior Tow Coach in the techniques, equipment and sagety factors to do with Tow Launches. This will start with an initial briefing consisting of:-

  • Fitting and Using a Tow Bridle
  • Winch Operation and winch safe areas
  • Weak Links
  • Commands and Signals
  • Emergency Procedures
  • Release Failure
  • Lock Outs
  • Launch - Wing / canopy Control - Release

After demonstrating ten satisfactory launches the STC will sign off your new rating (Always assuming he is entirely satisfied with your safety to operate).

BHPA Pilot Rating PDF Print E-mail
Pilot Exam

The purpose of this training is not only to get you successfully through the exam and get you your pilots wings, but also to arm you with knowledge that will hopefully make you a better and safer pilot and in doing so help you enjoy your sport more.

The Pilot's exam training consists of home study and three lectures to be held at the club. The lectures will be based on the packs provided by the club and should be though of as revision nights. We try and ensure that the lectures are light hearted and fun but serious enough to get the information across.

After this you will sit a BHPA Pilot exam. The papers will then be send to the BHPA for marking and you will get your results in writing (this normally takes about 2-3 weeks). If you have completed you tasks you will then (hopefully) get your new membership card and pilot-rating badge!

Throughout your study you are not alone and any one of the club's Pilots, Coaches and Senior Tow Coaches will be happy to help if there is anything you don't understand - please feel free to ask.

Lectures

Air Law
Theory Of Flight
Meteorology

The Exam

The exam is not easy and you will have to apply yourself - having said that any exam is easy if you know the answers!

Any keen pilot who devotes themselves to studying the matter should have no problem with the exam. All the required information is contained in the BHPA Pilot Handbook, the three study manuals supplied, and the Air Chart (Especially the legend). Background reading is always advisable and attendance of the club lecture evenings is strongly recommended.

The paper has three sections: Air Law and Navigation, Meteorology and Flight Theory and Instruments. To pass you must achieve at least 70% in each section. The papers use multiple-choice format, although a few questions require you to supply the 'Missing Word' from a list.
